Long Run Essentials.

Teaching last night’s cycle class was nothing short of awesome. One of the many things I love about that class is that I always leave without hardly any voice because I was shouting and laughing and having too much fun. I’m also digging these Nike cycle shoes that I bought recently. Thank you, ebay.

I have already hit the ground running this morning with a little Calvin Harris Pandora radio at my desk and lots of strong coffee.

Speaking of running…I wanted to share with you some essentials I keep handy for when I go on a long run. Especially during training and while racing, I kind of don’t know what I’d do without these things in my life.

Garmin Forerunner 10/Map My Run App

I use both of these devices for tracking my pace and mileage. I have worn both of them at the same time and they seem to match up and be accurate. I love being able to log on Map My Run afterwards and look at my splits. For races a majority of the time I use my Garmin but since it’s a pain to put on and charge all of the time, Map My Run is always my backup.

Sweaty Bands
I am in la la LOVE with these. I have tried other headbands and having ethnic crazy hair I need something that does not slide off of my head. So far nothing has worked except these babies. I have them in just about every style you can imagine. They are the perfect thickness and made with excellent quality. Even when you put them in the wash…they do not fall apart. I even wear them when I teach my spin classes.

Nuun
I drank this on my 14 mile run last weekend and absolutely loved it. For any run over about 12 miles I like to have some type of electrolyte drink and this one does the trick. So far I’m digging the lemon lime.

Honey Stinger Waffles
Typically I will have these for breakfast especially on race day. They are delicious. Like I probably would even eat them on a day that I’m not working out. They taste more like dessert than a nutritional item but are great and give you a nice boost for the long run. Nice to have if you need something quick and don’t have time to make a pre run breakfast.

Spi belt
These are great if you need to stash your keys, gels or whatever you bring along with you for a run. If I don’t have pants on with a zipper kind of pocket I use this. They’re also great to have for races, small and don’t get in the way of your running. I like to run without a whole bunch of junk on me and this does the trick.

Energy chews
I love these sport beans with caffeine in them. Usually I get the variety pack but if the running store I buy them at doesn’t have that I will get the cherry flavor. These are AWESOME for while you’re running marathons. I eat them at least every 5 or so miles and they are the only thing with caffeine so far that does not jack with my tummy while I’m running.

Pro Compression socks
I know I am always singing the praises of these socks but I don’t know what I’d do without these things. In fact I’m wearing them under my leggings at work right now. A lot of times I will wear them on a run if my legs are tired from a week of teaching or running a lot and they help with circulation and blood flow. I also love to wear them post run. Plus they come in lots of very fun colors.

What are some essentials you like to have on the long run?

  1. I LOVE my spi-belt. I can cram so much stuff in there. On super long runs, I need lots of energy gels to get me through & I can fit a bunch in there, plus my cell phone, plus my house key!

  2. A lot of similarities with the long run gear…I usually rely on zippered pockets, not crazy about the belts I’ve seen. The SPI belts though…I hear good things.

Didn’t know Nike even made cycling shoes…very cool.

  3. I have and love all these things, except for the Nuun and the beans with caffeine. I may have to try the beans…the others have upset my stomach in the past. I adore the Honey Stinger chews as well for during races!

  4. Wow!! I love your choices and use most of them!! I use the sport beans and Nuun + the same exact headbands (love them) and the same Garmin (in pink, too)!! 😉 Compression socks are the best and I’ll have to try the stinger waffles! Great post!
