Returning to Running Post Marathon and Weds Spin Playlist.

So I was reading an article from the awesome Jason Fitzgerald on returning to running post marathon. I definitely think recovery is the most vital in the weeks following 26.2 miles. I like to do somewhat of a reverse taper and slowly build the miles back up so I can get back out on those streets. And of course run to the tune of sunrises like this.

Here are some things I think are the most crucial in the first few weeks post marathon.

-Sleep. I can absolutely tell my body needs more of it after the rigors of marathon training. And I have to tell ya…lately I am just loving me some sleep. What helps me with this is just forcing myself to get in the bed around 9pm…and maybe listen to some relaxing music and then I slowly knock out.

-Stretching. Getting my yoga on lately has never felt so good. Check out Adriene’s yoga videos on youtube if you want to do some good workouts in your living room. Or like me, get your crow pose on in the kitchen.

-Massages. Check out Massage Envy locations all over the U.S. and if you work for a corporation they will let you use your benefits/flex account. I have been getting massages faithfully for several years and it helps prevent injury.

-Go on easy runs with no running watch/data, etc. Just BE OUTSIDE and enjoy the wind on your face. Listen to your feet as they hit the pavement. Listen to your breathing. Enjoy the sounds of nature…just the simplicity of a run and how it makes your body and mind feel.

-Hydration. I’ve been taking in lots of water lately. I can definitely tell when I don’t drink enough. Even as the weather gets colder out it is just as important to stay hydrated. Plus it makes your skin glow!

And without further ado…let’s get to this week’s spin playlist! I’ll be teaching a class tonight and tomorrow. Come join if you’re in the area!

  1. I love running without my watch. So liberating. I actually ran my last marathon without a watch. I’m still in recovery mode. My ankle is still not feeling the same. 😦 Hopefully soon though bc I want to sign up for a marathon in March. Ugh. Hurry up ankle. HEAL. 🙂

Thanks for the yoga tip. I will have to check that out on YouTube.

  2. I love your spin playlist! I wish I could magically teleport to your spin class 🙂 Also, I neeeeed to get back into yoga, I have been a total yoga-delinquent. I am going to check out Adriene’s vids tonight for sure!! 😀 Great motivation today, Chelsea!!! 🙂 🙂

  3. great tips — and yet another reminder that i must YOGA. yeesh. such a fail there. you look cute in that pose (whatever we call that — crow, maybe? yeah i don’t know). 🙂 great spin list — i want to take one of your classes! i just heard that “Tuesday” song last week for the first time and was totally dancing in my chair at the bar listening to it. i’ve been running consistently to the band 1975’s album for, like, a month now, and haven’t gotten sick of it…and i like Sam Hunt’s “Leave the Night On” and C. Brown/Usher’s “Walk a New Flame.” have a fab day, girl!
