Winter Running Essentials.

I was up pretty early this morning to teach spin…yes, I pretty much live at the gym now. But it kept me from sleeping in this morning so I got my run in along with core work. It’s a win win.

And I must say that hand warmers are a God send. Thanks to my coworker who bought me these for Christmas I was rockin and rollin.

It’s getting pretty nippy down in Texas…I actually love it. No snow as of yet…but it was 17 degrees this a.m. We’ll see if we can get a wintry mix.

Along with colder weather comes having some items to get you through those chilly runs. Here are some of my favorite essentials.

Gloves…yes without a doubt these would be my number one must have. My hands are the first thing that freeze up. If you want some fancy ones I really enjoy Brooks running gloves and have even found them at cheaper stores like TJ Maxx and Marshalls.

Thermal headbands…gotta keep those ears warm. If you know what’s good for ya you’ll get the warm fleece ones from Wal-Mart. They keep me nice and cozy. Here are some other good options.

Layers, layers, layers. For me this is really key. Here are some tips for how to layer up according to what region you live in. And yeah…I wish I was wearing shorts and a tank top with temps in the 50s/60s right about now.

Running tights…something breathable that will cover the entire leg…right now I’m a big fan of the Asics tights. I definitely wear these for any run under about 30 degrees but otherwise I’ll do capris or shorts. Check some of these out if you’re shopping for some.

What are some of your must have winter running essentials?

  1. Question…..what headband do you use that you find STAYS on? I have tried a few and have given up because even with the non-slip stuff on the back, they still ALWAYS come off, unless I secure it to my head with clips or something.

  2. 17 degrees in Texas?! eeeee brrrr. it’s 9 here today before windchill, which isn’t my fave choice. okay so i def possess a lotttt of cold weather running gear, being in NYC, and some of my essentials are good running tights, a headband (keep those ears covered at all times!), warm lil running gloves, and an Under Armour heat-activated tank to wear as a first layer. that has done WONDERS for me this winter.

  3. 3 things on my to buy list for running this winter: thermal headband, running tights, and now hand warmers – great idea! I have gloves but they are never enough!!

  4. I love a good half-zip because even though it sometimes feel like the arctic tundra in Boston, I am a furnace and am always struggling to take layers off mid-run. A half-zip goes a long way. Great list, Chels!! 😀 Hope you stay warm down there. It’s freezing up here too!!

    • haha at the fact that you are a furnace. My hands are always the first things to get cold. I don’t layer a whole bunch but then again down in TX I don’t really have to unless there’s a cold snap (like right now).

  5. I love light long sleeved tees (Lululemon Run: Swiftly Tech Long Sleeve are my favorite, I always snag them when they go on WMTM!) because even though it’s not freezing here in SF, the wind is usually howling when I am out for my runs!

  6. I live in half zips in the winter! I get over heated and the zipper is like a thermostat. As for gloves… I can’t stand them. I have no idea why. I buy my shirts long so I can wrap them around my hands haha

    • Bless your heart I’d die without my gloves. I have cold hands like an old lady…of course I’m an old lady at heart so that is likely why. Half zips are the shiznit now that we can both agree on!

  7. I just got a pair of those Reebok tights – love them because they are much warmer than standard running tights!!!
And, I use hand warmers a LOT!!!

  8. Great tips Chelsea!! I definitely need gloves! My hands would freeze without them!! I bought the Saucony Ulti-Mitt Run Glove and they are fabulous!! Super warm! Running tights are my favorite, too!! Have a wonderful Friday!! You rock! Such a hard worker! Love it! XOXO

  9. We are in the midst of an extreme cold weather alert, but seasoned runners are still out doing their runs. The tights they wear look like what you listed. Brrr…. They must be very dedicated to the sport. Very admirable.

  10. I was happy to see I have all the things you mentioned! This is my first winter ever having to worry about “winter running” (usually, I am in south Florida paradise). So far, so good!
