Rainy Run and 4 Ways to Survive Taper Madness.

I was up for a rainy run this morning enjoying the few drizzles in my neighborhood. Temps have gotten a tad cooler around here…but as you know Texas weather is so back and forth so we should be back in the 70s before my 50k race day.

So this week is a TAPER WEEK for me as I scale back the miles a bit in preparation for Sunday’s ultra. I’m no stranger to the madness of the taper so I thought I’d give you a few tips to have in your back pocket leading up to race day. And most of all…how to stay SANE and enjoy these days of rest and recovery!

1. Enjoy the free time! Find a hammock somewhere, kick back…catch up on that novel you haven’t had much time to read. While you’re at it, throw on those compression socks and allow them to work their magic.

2. Stay low key and avoid the drama. Don’t be afraid to say ‘NO’ to people or anything that will lead to your schedule being crazy. Just always remember…this week, less is more. Don’t let your ego tell you otherwise.

3. Focus on what you CAN control. You surely cannot dictate whether it’s going to be too hot or too cold or the water stops on the course. What you can dictate is your sleep, nutrition and hydration in these last few days. Focus on those things and forget about the rest.

4. Remember these few things about the TAPER. I’m going to hang these up on my wall somewhere.

    • Yeah my weekly mileage has been close to 50-60 miles a week this time around but I always have a love/hate relationship with the taper! I think I just love to runrunrun all the time…running is my favorite. haha

  1. Chelsea, I just want you to know that I read your story tonight and I got sooooo inspired! I’ve been wanting to become a runner for about 3 years now. I’ve started and stopped a countless amount of time. I too am a cycle instructor, but in Denton and I have GAINED weight since teaching rather than lost. It’s no secret that I LOVE all the wrong foods! So TONIGHT…because of you, I ran 3 miles about an hour ago and I’m going to try my best to stick to it this time. I haven’t run in over a year!!! Thank you for sharing your story and know that you are inspiring complete random chicks that you’ve never met before! Good luck on your ultra!

    XOXO,

    Joy

    • Hi Joy!! That’s so awesome and it’s great to meet another spin cycle instructor! I totally can relate to your issues with teaching and trying to balance nutrition/exercise and just life in general. The struggle is REAL! But I think spinning is such a fantastic compliment to running. I often run and spin in the same day…it will definitely make your legs stronger along with regular strength training and really just mixing up your workouts! Keep up the great work and happy running! I will always be here for motivation!! Feel free to email me if you want to chat some more. Have a great day!

  2. love this. always have a hard time tapering especially when the training is on FIRE. But you’re right, trust the training. Everything else will fall into place. You’ve been doing amazing things so TRUST. XOXOXO
