Day in the Life, Running, Ultra Running

Highs and Lows of Life and Running.

Hey there! Hope your day is off to a swell start. Yes, I said swell. I am going to bring that word back from the ancient times. I swear it will be a thing again. One day.

So I know of a few blogs that do the ‘highs and lows’ of their day or what have you. I thought it would be fun to do the highs and lows of life- and running. Because, clearly this is a running blog. And that is what we discuss.

Here are a few highs and lows of running that I have experienced lately in no particular order.

High- Finishing a 16 mile run before 7 something AM on a Saturday. Feels oh so good. Brunch was definitely earned that day.

Low- Having to get up at 4:30 in the morning to complete said run. On a Saturday. I love my early morning runs don’t get me wrong but on a weekend – yeah, I definitely took a late morning nap that day.

High- Teaching a spin class full of people. As an instructor that always gets me so pumped and fired up! It’s totally like a dance party on the bike. All I need now is disco lights.

Low- Having the sound system/stereo go completely OUT on you while teaching a spin class full of people. Yes, teaching indoor cycling without music is like watching paint dry.

High- Running 70, 80 and sometimes up to 100 miles a week during ultra training – and feeling like a super strong badass ultrarunner. It has taken me literally YEARS to get to this point. Feels so good to maintain that kind of mileage. You feel kind of like a superhero machine of sorts.

Low- Um, being hungry like ALL THE TIME. Gotta keep healthy snacks around to keep the engine revved up all day long.

High- Being back on the dating scene. I actually enjoy it and knowing exactly what I desire at this point in my life I feel is key. It was funny, when I was in my early 20s I put up with a ton of stuff and now my tolerance for B.S. Is just ZERO. I could write a book actually. LOL.

Low- The pickup lines some of these guys deliver. Like, really fellas. Does that work on women these days? Freaking hilarious.

High- Cooler weather (Hallelujah, Texas is catching on with the crisp cooler fall weather this week), festive fall beverages (you MUST try this Trader Joe’s harvest blend tea it is incredible), and the changing leaves. No doubt fall is my favorite time of year.

Low- Adjusting to said cooler weather on the run. It has been so warm and incredibly humid this year in Dallas and my body was actually starting to love the summertime temps. Now, I have to adjust the body back to being cold again. HA. Plus I am always cold especially inside buildings & at work. Yes, I keep a blanket permanently in my office.

What are some highs and lows in running (and life) for you lately?

Day in the Life, Fun, Random, Running

Confessions, Things I’m Loving and Such.

I have a slight obsession at the moment with sparkling water. Passionfruit and cucumber melon have to top the list of the 2 faves. Not sure why but drinking bubbles in the summer time just makes me happy.

I subbed an early morning spin class this week and it made me feel pretty nostalgic. When I first started teaching I taught on Mondays early in the mornings and did so for about 3 years. Now I just teach 3 nights a week and really love my cycle party happy hours. But the morning folks are so sweet it made me miss it a little bit. For now I think I’ll just stick to my morning runs and just teach at the gym at night.

I am really thankful that I’ve fallen in love with trail running. After being a devout road runner for so many years (which I still love) it is fun to get off the beaten path sometimes. Especially when you are putting in so much mileage training for ultras. Sometimes you just need a change of pace.

Our family dog Brady is absolutely the cutest is he not? He just got a haircut for the summer. I love his little random white paw with the black paw. Such a cutie pie.

I’m sorry in advance for those of you that sell Lipsense but that ish is seriously overrated. I mean why am I paying so much for lipgloss, because it stays on!? Sometimes I don’t want my gloss to stay on that long. Also, I feel like I have alcohol on my lips it stains them so much. No thank you. And I have a tube I never used so I gave it away. You can keep it.

Lately I have been loving the sunsets almost more than the sunrises. Not sure why that is. I will always and forever be a morning runner but there is just something about the sunset and evening runs (of course on double run days) that I am feeling lately.

Hammocks on balconies are kind of a thing now in my ‘hood. I swear everyone has one and now I want one. How fun would it be to kick it outside on your balcony in a hammock and read a book? I need to make this happen.

I have Friday completely off this week and it is definitely much needed. I plan on getting in as much pool time as possible on my long weekend.

What are some confessions, random rants, or things you’re loving today?

Day in the Life, Running

Day in the Life Lately.

I did a post on this a while back but since life has changed in the last few years I thought I’d do a day in the life post on my routine as of late. Life is still pretty busy but I’ve tried to manage to find a balance in the midst of it all. Having two jobs is always fun (full time working behind the scenes writing for television, part time fitness instructor) so it can get hectic from time to time. Gotta love it.

5-5:30 a.m.: Up and at ‘em for an early morning run with the Irving Running Club. I host this morning run group during the work week, so often times I will run with them, or run solo on days that we do not meet. The best way to start the day…see a stellar sunrise.

7-7:30 a.m.: Shower, have a banana. Do some yoga stretching/foam rolling in my living room. Gotta stretch out those tight runner’s hips, calves and hamstrings.

9 a.m.: Get to work, check some emails over my morning coffee. Put out a few early morning fires before our live show.

11 a.m.: Live show (Marcus and Joni on Daystar if you watch Christian TV, it’s entertaining I promise you!) sit in the control room doing behind the scenes producer type stuff.

Noon: Show is over, lunchtime. Sometimes I’ll go for a 2nd short run for the day or I’ll wait until after work.

5:30 p.m.: Head out from work, maybe short run to warm up before heading to job number 2 for the day. Spin cycle at 24 Hour Fitness.

6:30 p.m.: Teach class at the gym for an hour, maybe lift some weights after class if I have time.

7:45-8 p.m.: Shower, eat dinner (usually prepped or something that I bought from Trader Joe’s) while catching up on the Real Housewives of Atlanta or some crazy reality shows.

8:30 p.m.: Accidentally fall asleep on the couch while watching said shows.

9:00 p.m.: Drag myself to the bed, bedtime and lights out by 9:30-ish.

Then get up and do it all again! So now you know.

What does your day in the life look like?

Day in the Life, Running, yoga

8 Miles, Yoga and My Go-To Outfit.

I was loving the peace and solitude of this morning’s run + some yoga. 8 easy miles, enjoying a little breeze even though it was mostly warm. It was definitely a good run though. I needed the quiet time.

Afterwards I did some planks and hip openers in my living room. If you’re busy busy on the go I definitely recommend you try this out. It was a nice cleanse to get my day going especially after a good run..and my body definitely needed it. Sometimes I forget how much I love the challenge of yoga any how happy it makes my body (and mind) feel.

I’m a little strapped for time but I read a devotional that really encouraged me…let love be your ‘go-to outfit’ today.

Dames Dinner Club and My New Favorite App.

Happy Thursday to you! This morning’s run…enjoying some sunrise action while I pounded the pavement a bit.

I decided to try out MapMyRun on my phone for this run and I LOVED it! Seriously my new favorite app. So much data on this free app…you can see the elevation of your route, pace, distance, and mile SPLITS. People…save yourself money if you don’t already own a Garmin or GPS watch and get this app like pronto tonto. It is insanely awesome.

Last night after teaching I dashed on home to get fresh and meet up with the girls at The Standard Pour for the Dames Dinner Club. 3 nights a week various spots in Uptown Dallas host a free 3 course meal for the ladies along with drink specials. We got caught up while we dined on the patio. I will definitely be going to more of these in the future! Come join, you know you want to.
