5 Runner Recipes for Fall.

With a bit of a chill in the air this morning (when I say chill I mean like 70 degrees, we are in TX after all HA) I thought I would share a few of my favorite recipes for the fall season! These are sure to keep you full and satisfied post run and also great protein/carb ratio for maximum recovery! Or something like that. Hey, I do not pretend to be a nutritionist…but I sure do run a heck of a LOT! So let’s get down to business. Click the links for recipes!

Turkey taco soup: This is one of my most favorite cozy meals and it is just so simple and easy. Plus you can make a huge batch and eat from it the entire week. So it is a win win. Excellent with a few slices of avocado and cheese. Yasss.

Pumpkin smoothie: I love this one because it is totally nutrition packed and combines all of my favorite things! Plus y’all I tried some honey greek yogurt (thank you TRADER JOE’S) in my smoothie over the weekend. HEAVEN.

Roasted kabocha squash: This stuff is just oh so good and I love that it has a sweetness to it. It’s super filling and I like to drizzle a little agave or honey over it. Maybe some cinnamon. Roast in the oven and serve. It’s kind of like a snack and a dessert all in one.

Tex Mex Sweet Potatoes: I kinda sorta made this up on the fly a while back but sweet potatoes are just great to put just about anything in. Everything is good Mexican style, am I right or am I right?! And yes, paper plates are classy.

Butternut squash mac n cheese: This is of course a lighter version of an all time favorite. I like to use the gluten free noodles as well (or quinoa noodles if you can find em. So freaking good. I am going to have to make some after my 50 miler this weekend.

Ways to Get Social With Your Running This Fall.

So it is fall time. The leaves are changing, the air is feeling a tad cooler, and pumpkin spice everything abounds. It is not as sweltering hot and definitely makes it much more pleasant to step out for more miles. So what are some great ways you can get more social with your running this fall? Well I am here to share just that…

-Get outside of your RUNNING GROUP comfort zone. Do you always run with the same group day in and day out? Try to stretch your social skills and find OTHER running groups in the area! Hey it can be fun to “cheat” on your usual run group every now and again. Not only does it keep things exciting with your routes, but you without a doubt meet new people and have tons of running buddies to bounce around and run with. It is a win win.

-Find a HALLOWEEN race, or trick or treat fall social run. You could even make up one of your own! There are a couple of social runs in my area that do this every year. We dress up and run around the bars and such throwing out candy. It is always a great time!! I mean really, when it is not when you get to dress up in costume.

-Do something with your run buds that is NOT running related. GASP! Who would think of such a thing? Well I tell you what runners are probably the most fun people to hang out with in the universe. We certainly know how to have a good time. And a fall themed event (like a haunted house or theme park) and go check it out post run with your friends. It surely will be a great bonding experience.

-Grab brunch or a festive fall coffee post weekend long run. I actually used to plan a Fall Harvest party every year and invite all of my buds over. It is a great way to thank your running friends just for being there for you in general.

Back into the Running Groove and a Fall Bucket List.

So this week I am slowly getting back into the running groove post marathon! I will say I haven’t been this sore after a race in quite some time…my quads really took a beat down!! But, thank you for your KIND well wishes and thoughts regarding my somewhat emotional marathon post yesterday. That was a tough one to write but hey…we all have our good and not so good races, yes? I do have my eye on some other races in between training leading up to my 2nd 100 mile race in December! Because fall is my favorite time to RUN. So stay tuned, we shall see how that goes.

Since it is not quite as insanely hot down in Texas today…and with the fall JUST around the corner…I thought I would go ahead and create my favorite list for the season! Oh yes, that would be the official FALL bucket list.

Here are a few things I am looking forward to along with the yummy cooler running weather (yes I said YUMMY) and the leaves changing. Yes yes yes.

The State Fair of TexasThose of you that have been reading this biog for a while know that this is hands down one of my most favorite Texas events! I’ve been loving our massive, famous state fair since I was a child. I honestly just like walking around…checking out the exhibits, wine garden…maybe getting a TX sized smoked turkey leg. And who on earth can forget our favorite. BIG TEX. Basically it’s a giant cowboy statue in the middle of the fair that actually talks and everyone loves him and takes pictures. It’s…just…so…Dallas. And we love it.

His look has changed a bit over the years, but you get the picture.

Pumpkin butter. To be honest I’m really not a pumpkin spice latte fan (but I do like autumn flavored drip coffees) but I will tell you that I’m all about making decadent fall treats and such. So I plan on getting this one from my local farmer’s market. And eating it by the spoonful. Yum. It’s so good on toast too.

Roasting pumpkin seeds. Pumpkin carving is definitely a lot of work, so I may be buying my seeds from my local farmers market and then adding spices to them and roasting them. But I just love pumpkin seeds in general. Such a good healthy snack.

Running a fall themed race. Okay…so I am going to try and see about running a fall race this season because it gets me super pumped up about running when the temps are dropping. So I’m going to try and maybe run one of those. A few years ago I ran a Halloween half marathon and I was a leopard. Fun fun.

Fall boots and scarves. OH YES. I need to buy some at a discount though. There are also all kinds of great ideas on Pinterest. I really need to start stocking up. This grey one is always a fave.

Cozy up the home and stock up on yummy fall scented beauty products. I get this pumpkin lotion every year at a fall festival and I think this year I’m going to have to buy at least 5 bottles at a time. It is pure heaven.

My Favorite Running Weather and a Fall Bucket List.

Hello there! Hope your day is off to a good start. I was able to get in 10.06 miles this morning with some pretty luxurious cooler weather! We had a nice little cool front come through overnight and this morning temps were in the 50s. IN THE 50s YOU GUYS. I have to say temps in the 40s and 50s is really my favorite type of running weather. Yes, I was just complaining about it being 90 the other day. It is short lived since Texas weather is bipolar but at this point I will take what I can get.

So I thought with the arrival of cooler weather and fall that I would create a lovely fall bucket list! This is without a doubt my most favorite time of year to get outdoors and enjoy the sights and sounds of the season. So here we go in no particular order.

Buy some new cozy fall boots. I honestly feel like you can never have enough! Really around here we don’t wear the boots hard core until winter rolls around (blame bipolar Texas weather again) but I really do need to stock up.

Make a pumpkin fall treat. I am eyeing these healthy-ish pumpkin chocolate chip muffins.

Go to ALL of the fall festivals (headed to the State Fair of Texas this weekend! Woo-hoo)

Purchase an abundance of cozy smell good candles. Marshmallow fireside from Bath and Body Works is actually one of my favorites.

Run through the amazing fall leaves. We are starting to see some leaves change color here, little by little! Very soon I will running in an autumn wonderland and it will be lovely.

Run a fall-themed race. Oktoberfest 50k is very soon!! Can’t wait to run and then partake in the festivities after.

4 Things I Love About Running in the Fall.

Oh goodness you guys. This morning’s run was absolutely fantastic! The weather was incredible and it definitely made my legs and feet all kinds of happy. I am hoping this fall weather stays around and blesses us for a while. Thank you baby Jesus.

Fall I have to say is my favorite time of year. Fall foliage, boots and scarves and all things pumpkin. The colors of nature to me just come alive. I am all about it. Here are just a few things that I love about fall running.

This pic was from November of last year. But isn’t it beautiful? I simply cannot wait until the leaves change into this shade down in TX.

The weather cooling off just a tad after enduring crazy hot temps all summer long. As the weather cools off especially in the mornings I can feel my legs moving just a bit faster too. That hard work and dedication does pay off.

Feeling the fall leaves underneath my feet. It’s a autumn lovers paradise.

Getting to wear layers again. As you know in Texas for about 4-5 months out of the year (and sometimes longer) we are wearing nothing but flip flops, tanks and shorts. So when I get to bust out my half zip tops I get excited because it is oh so rare.

ALL OF THE RACES. We have so many races coming up around this time of year in Texas. I love the fall themed ones like the Pumpkin Spice 15k and Halloween fun runs. And of course fall marathons are just the best way to celebrate running 26.2 style.

Cooler Weather is Coming and a Fall Bucket List.

Happy Fall, ya’ll! It is a good day for coffee. I was so excited to see the extended forecast on the news after my run this morning. We are supposed to have some morning temps in the 60s in the coming days! Oh happy day. Hey, it beats the oppressive heat as of late. I will just endure these next few hot days until that happens.

8.5 miles done. I have a shorter run also scheduled this evening in the shade. Double run days are the absolute best. I see a glass of wine in my future this evening. Hashtag earned it.

So since fall is upon us and the cooler weather is right around the corner let’s chat about some items on my bucket list this time around. Can’t wait to check ‘em all off the list!

Make some sort of delicious pumpkin item. I need to rack up all of the pumpkin recipes I can find. Recipes welcome.

Drink autumn flavored coffee. Which I actually did this morning. The autumn blend at Java Me Up is absolutely divine. Forget what you heard about the PSL. I’m all about supporting local.

Go to the State Fair of Texas. Best time of year hands down. Opening day is next weekend so you know where I will be!

Go to a pumpkin patch. We have a ton of ‘em around here and I will need to pick out a pumpkin to do some carving.

Do some tailgating. Friends and football is always an excellent combination.

Run a festive fall themed race. The Pumpkin Spice 15k is actually my favorite. They have the best race swag and last year you got a pumpkin pie if you placed in your age group. I have my eye on the prize.

Make some spiked apple cider. I have this recipe in mind. Sounds wonderful.

Friday Eve and 3 Ingredient Protein Cookies.

I finally came across some fall leaves on this morning’s 10k run. Texas is always so behind on the fall foilage! I’ve been Dora the Explorer lately trying to find some pretty fall colors.

Oh yes…and from now on Thursday is no longer Thursday ya’ll…it’s FRIDAY EVE. Let’s make it a thing okay? Okay.

Screen Shot 2015-11-05 at 10.45.25 AM

Today I have a yummy breakfast/snack cookie that has just a few ingredients and packs a little protein punch! My 3 ingredient protein cookies.

Here’s what you’ll need.

-1/2 cup of organic rolled oats, dry
-1 medium ripe banana
-1 scoop of vanilla protein powder (I highly recommend this vegan protein from Everlast-non dairy/no sugar with great taste!)

Mash the banana and then mix in oats and protein powder. Optional: add a drizzle of honey or agave to the mashed banana mix. Roll into balls and flatten onto a nonstick cookie sheet. Bake in the oven on 350 for 15 minutes or until cooked through. I like them a little chewy in the middle so don’t leave ‘em in the oven for too long!

Add chocolate chips or coconut shreds for more fun.

7 Ways to Enjoy Fall Running.

7 humid but chilly miles done this morning…it felt so good to finish this run strong! I am a cold weather runner at heart so I was so happy there was a nice chill in the air.

I don’t know about you…but down in Texas this is my most favorite time of year to run. I live for cool mornings, pullovers, running tights and yes, even ear warmers. The crisp cool fall weather also means running faster to warm up! For me at least. Here are a few ways you can enjoy fall running in your neck of the woods.

1. Get yourself a lightweight jacket that’s perfect for running in the wind/rain. Sometimes fall weather can be unpredictable so it helps to have gear that can protect you when that random rainstorm pops up. I love the ones from Asics.

Screen Shot 2015-10-27 at 9.49.58 AM

2. Find a trail with some beautiful fall foliage. There’s nothing more beautiful than getting off the beaten path and enjoying the quiet of the trail.

Screen Shot 2015-10-27 at 10.06.43 AM

3. It helps to have layers. Usually I’ll wear a tank or short sleeve shirt with a pullover top that I can quickly take off and tie around my waist. Make sure you have plenty of long sleeved light weight tops to go around as the temps get cooler.

4. Make sure your gear is reflective…or get yourself a headlamp if you run early in the mornings. They sell them at any outdoor store and often will have fun girly colors. I have a bright blue one from when I did the Grasslands Trail Run.

5. Go for a social run with friends or with a local running group. Lots of run clubs host weekly runs or fun Halloween runs this time of year that end with a happy hour. Get social and enjoy working it out with like minded folks.

6. Sign up for a festive fall race. I’ll be running the Pumpkin Spice 15k in November after my marathon and I’m definitely looking forward to it. Perfect name for a race…am I right?

7. Make time for a hot cozy fall beverage post run. Whether it’s a cup of hot holiday tea with honey at home or an skinny latte at Starbucks, having something to look forward to after logging those miles is all the more motivating.

Currently and Hello October.

Happy October to you! I don’t know about you but there is definitely a change in the air. My 7 mile run was absolutely wonderful with a nice breeze. I almost did not want to stop but you know…I have this thing called a job and someone’s gotta do it.

Here are some things that I’m currently seeing, hoping…dreaming about. Loving this list from this gal’s blog so I thought I’d do my own.

Reading: D Magazine. They are definitely keeping me up to date on all things happening in my ‘hood. Plus, hello…the 25 things you must do in Dallas this October. I’m on it.

Deciding: To get in more patio time this fall. Preferably if this place is involved.

Seeing: My girlfriends more often. They make the world go ‘round.

Wishing: For pretty glittery pumpkins on my doorstep. Because everything is better with glitter. Or bedazzled.

Hoping: For some more trail running time very soon. Love getting off the beaten path.

Making: These oatmeal pumpkin chocolate chip cookies. Organic rolled oats, banana, pumpkin, semi sweet chocolate chips. I kind of threw it together but it worked out really well.

Feeling: Like it’s time to bust out the wine colored nail polish. Just because.

Dreaming: Of apple cider sangria. Or apple cider in the crockpot. Both need to happen soon.

Wondering: When the high is going to be below 90 degrees down in TX. I’m thinking it may happen this weekend. Hallelujah.

Snacking: On roasted pumpkin seeds. Love it love it. They are super addictive.

Embarrassing: myself all the time while teaching classes at the gym. I’m kind of used to it though…haha…hashtag no shame.

Remembering: My very first marathon…Chicago on 10.10.10. Miss that city…and the Garrett’s popcorn.

Flipping: Over this southwestern spaghetti squash. I need it in my life.

Chasing: The morning sun. Always always.

Throwing: Some sort of wine and cheese party…very soon. Maybe for the holidaze.

Struggling: With being in the present. Always a work in progress for me.

Vowing: To get better at saying ‘NO’.

Eating: All of the fall things…anything with the words pumpkin or butternut squash in it. All day every day. Oh, and grape tomatoes. These are freaking fantastic.

Screen Shot 2015-10-01 at 10.43.34 AM

Trying: Something new every time I go to a sushi joint. Loved the serrano yellowtail from this place.

Loving: My first fall leaf I saw on my run the other day.

Screen Shot 2015-10-01 at 10.44.48 AM

Wanting: To see Las Vegas and then Hawaii. Oh so soon. Bring on November & December vacation time.

What are you currently making/wanting/snacking on?

Happy Friday to ya! Hope you are over there doing the happy dance with me and your girl Cookie. Bring on the weekend.

This girl’s Run to the Top podcast. I tell you what having something fun and running related to listen to has gotten me through a lot of miles lately. Check it out.

11 daily habits that will make you mentally and physically stronger. I can dig it.

7 things to do this fall. I definitely need to work on making my place autumn ready. These pillows from Kirkland’s make me happy.
