Weds Spin Playlist.

Hellloooo there!!! It is a beautiful day in the neighborhood…I was able to get my hiney out of bed and run in this crazy Texas heat and humidity. So hallelujah and thank you Jesus for that. The sunrise did not disappoint…

I also thought I would do a little humble bragging on myself because I just completed the Strava June distance challenge in monthly mileage!! Over 200k miles for the month and counting. Before June is even over. I actually really don’t like bragging on myself but lately I’ve been trying to start doing things that make me uncomfortable. So yeah, here you go. Ha.

So you know what day of the week it is…Weds spin playlist day! Hope you enjoy. And check out where I’m teaching classes next if you’re local.

Also, find me on Spotify. It’s a party going on over there.

Hope you enjoy the ride!

What songs are you moving and grooving to this week?

Thoughts on the Run, Spring Edition.

-So yeah…what to wear this morning. Leggings or shorts? I had better check the weather forecast.
-Oh good, it’s above 55 degrees at 5 a.m. Shorts are safe.
-Garmin charged, check. Time to head out.
-It sure is breezy out. And humid.
-2 miles in and I’m already sweating buckets. Gotta love Texas crazy spring weather.
-Is it raining? No, just random rain cloud…looks like it’s passing.
-So humid. At least it’s fairly cool and breezy. I know I will miss this early a.m. breeze come summer time.
-Ew, it smells like skunks out here.
-I think there’s one now. And he is charging towards me?
-Time to re route.
-Oh look, a little daylight. Beautiful clouds.
-I’m in love with Texas bluebonnets and all of the wildflowers. Amazing.
-Pretty sky. Pretty sunrise. Best part of waking up.
-Well that, and obviously, coffee.
-How do some people run in the mornings without having coffee afterwards is beyond me.
-Alright, one more mile and I’m done. So humid. Want to be done. Now.
-Ah, finally done. Coffee time. I think I’ll get an extra shot of espresso today. Because I can.

Check out my thoughts on the run in the summerfall and winter too!

What are some of your thoughts while running in the springtime?

5 Things to Love About Running Solo.

Most of you know that I am the number one advocate of running clubs and group running but some days there is just nothing like geeking out on a solo run. Here are 8 things I love about running solo in no particular order…

Screen Shot 2016-01-18 at 9.09.48 AM

1. Time to brainstorm/clear your head. I don’t know about you but after a long day at work, one of my favorite things is going on a run to work out the stress of the day. There is nothing better.

2. For meditation & enjoying nature…I love my solo sunrise runs sometimes. I like to call them RUNrises actually. Love it.

3. Better opportunity to focus on your pace and your breathing. A lot of times when you get caught up in a group run it’s harder to focus on how you are progressing during a run. I enjoy doing my tempo/faster runs alone so I can concentrate on what I am doing.

4. I see things I don’t normally see than when I’m with a group of people. Being more observant can definitely be a good thing. Safety first.

5. I get to be a little more silly/sing out loud/dance to my music etc. I’m an only child and also a goof ball so I’m just really good at entertaining myself. HA. Nuff said.

What are some things you enjoy about solo running?

Cedar Ridge Preserve, Poolside and Wknd Recap.

Long running, pool time and fun with friends = one awesome weekend! Hope you had a great weekend as well! Of course I had to capture the RUNrise action. Let’s do a quick recap!

2016-06-18 09.28.08

Saturday I did a pretty HOT run with my Irving Running Club crew. A couple of us had 12 miles on tap for the day. It was already 80 something degrees at 6 a.m. Gotta love that.

IMG_20160618_092134

I made sure to rehydrate with my Starbucks pink drink. Coconut milk and acai mixed together just makes me happy.

The rest of the day was pretty relaxing. Just chillin’ poolside by the palm trees.

2016-06-20 09.02.19

And I got all caught up with the bestie. Love this girl and our fun adventures together.

Saturday night sushi…because when it’s 95 degrees outside…that’s just what you do.

The next morning I met up with some running buds for our trail run Sunday out at Cedar Ridge Preserve. Love this place…it’s some challenging terrain for trail running but is so pretty and peaceful.

2016-06-19 10.28.14

We’re getting ready for a trail relay in July so we have been out there practicing.

I definitely have to get off the beaten path more. Loving this view.

How was your weekend? Do you have any summer races coming up soon?
Fossil Valley and the Hottest Half Marathon!

5 Ways to Enjoy Summer Running.

Hello! It was a 7 before 7 kind of morning…just enjoying this awesome (humid) view with my running club. 7 miles before 7 a.m.

2016-06-14 07.37.34

I tell ya…it sure is starting to heat up down here! I’m seeing lots of weekend pool time in my near future.

Screen Shot 2016-06-14 at 10.27.16 AM

Post run refreshment…have you tried the Starbucks pink drink yet? It’s filled with acai and coconut milk, then strawberries thrown in. And all for less than 150 calories. You can read more about it here. My new summer favorite.

2016-06-14 10.21.53

Speaking of summer…and humidity…here are a few ways you can enjoy those miles this season…run happy and beat the heat!

1. Lather up on that sunscreen…and the body glide. Chafing can definitely be avoided with the right products. I recommend body glide and also coconut oil! If you didn’t know coconut oil actually is a natural SPF. I would mix the two for best results. Your skin will thank you.

2. Don’t underestimate the power of electrolytes. Especially with longer runs, I like to take in some Nuun or mix my water with a bit of gatorade.

3. It’s okay to slow the pace down in order to adapt and acclimate to the heat. I tend to run 30 seconds to a minute per mile slower than usual in the summer. Not to worry…when those fall marathons roll around and it cools off you will be stronger both physically and mentally! Just get through those runs and you will absolutely build strength and endurance. Consistency is key.

4. Have the proper running swag. Wear light colored clothing, dri fit tops and shorts. The lighter the material, the better.

5. Run in the heat with awesome people. It surely helps those runs go way faster when you run with fun buddies!

2016-06-14 07.38.12

What are some ways you enjoy those summer miles?

Would You Rather? Running Edition.

I got out this a.m. for some easy solo miles, shaking the legs out before this weekend’s ultra. It felt good to get the cobwebs out of my brain and think about my race strategy while I watched the sunrise. Happy miles indeed.

IMG_20160505_085924

Tonight I will be packing my cooler, filling it with some race goodies and getting ready for the awesomeness come Saturday. I am actually pretty excited and ready for the joy ride!

So since it has been a while since I’ve done a runner’s survey, I stumbled upon one from this girl and thought it would be fun for today! Let’s get to it.

Would you rather…

Run a 5k or a marathon?
Honestly, it depends on my mood…but MOST times my answer is the marathon. I love all of the happy feel good endorphins running long gives you, but I also love the thrill of speedwork and chasing after a super fast finish time. Deep down though my heart will always and forever love the 26.2.

29f7c2c5cd06160f189b1632ce068fa0

Run without music or run without your GPS?
Without music…sometimes there is nothing better than the sound of the birds, rustling of the trees, and my feet hitting the pavement. Nature makes its own music. I also sometimes just crave the peace and quiet.

Run a flat race in the heat or a hilly race in the cold?
Definitely hills in the cold. I am a sucker for some cold racing weather! I’m talking about when your hands are numb type cold. My marathon PR was in 30 degree weather in D.C. (Marine Corps Marathon) & my 2nd fastest was 40 degrees, 37 mile an hour wind and rain. I told ya’ll already that I was crazy.

Run alone or run with a group for every run of an entire training cycle?
It’s funny because about a year ago I would have given you a different answer. Nowadays I am more motivated running with a group. My running group helps me strive to be better, run faster and push harder and they are some of the most awesome folks you will ever meet! I can’t wait to train this summer with them.

600_449205541

Get a new pair of running shoes or a new running outfit for free?
Running shoes! I ALWAYS need running shoes. Actually every time my dad asks me what I want for my birthday/Christmas/whatever holiday I always tell him shoes. I wear those bad boys out super quick.

Train through winter for a spring race or through summer for a fall race?
I train through all kinds of weather…since Texas weather is pretty bipolar. But winters are so mild here and we hardly ever get ice or snow so I enjoy spring training just a little bit more. I tend to run faster in the winter/spring because of the weather. The heat slows me down but I will still run through it mostly because I am working on my tan. It’s like sauna running with the Texas triple digit temps.

Screen Shot 2015-07-16 at 9.50.15 AM

Run with a blister the whole time or a side cramp?
Yikes! Neither…at least side cramps tend to go away faster.

Run on the treadmill for an hour or around the same city block for an hour?
City block. I really don’t run on the treadmill much at all anymore unless I’m doing speedwork.

Have a post race beer or post race dessert?
I’m going to pretend the question above says wine…so now you know my answer.

8b19991478b52b1a88f03f1d455b094c

If you could only run one race in a year, a big city race like Chicago or a small, local race?
I truly love small, intimate races but if I only raced once a year (imagine that) I’d race a bigger one. I just love the crowd/spectator support and all the signs along the way. It really gets me fired up!

How about you? Answer any or all of the running questions!

Weds Spin Playlist.

I thought I’d share a snapshot from this morning’s RUNrise. Simply beautiful…the weather this morning once again was amazing too. I kind of wish I could find a patio and stay outdoors all day long. But I guess someone has to do some work.

Friday Faves a Day Early.

Hello friends! It’s my Friday so I’m dancing around the office looking kind of like this. My coworkers already know I’m crazy so they do not mind.

Since I’ve got a long weekend ahead of me and will be out bouncing around the streets tomorrow let’s do this week’s favorites a day early!

-Crazy beautiful runrises like the one this morning. Hello 8 miles.

IMG_20150702_074829

Turkey zucchini burgers with lemon. Yes, I have a serious obsession with zucchinis lately for whatever reason.

29 Steph Curry reactions for everyday situations. Perfection. And ohmygoodness his daughter is just the cutest.

-English lavender soap…well anything lavender scented honestly is my jam. Makes my skin very happy.

IMG_20150702_102619

-Iced chai with coffee…mmm that freshly pressed ginger was so awesome.
