Monday Mood, Moving Mayhem and Wknd Recap.

Monday mood. Why YES…Phaedra. I would love some coffee. Thank you for asking! Coffee and Mondays go hand in hand…am I right?

and yes…I think I am going to get this shirt in every color. Right up my alley.

Hope you all had a lovely weekend. Mine was quite busy over here! I moved into a new place, got some running in and hung out with friends. Overall it was a productive, yet fun time.

Friday I had the day off from work (sorry, no TGIFriday Faves post!) and that day was moving day. I had all of my boxes ready to go. Thankfully I hired movers and my mama took a half day to help so the process was super smooth. I actually don’t think I’ve had a move go that smooth before! Check out God Brothers and Sisters moving company by the way if you’re in the Dallas area. They are freaking awesome.

Saturday I got to escape from moving mayhem for a long run with one of my IRC buds. It rained earlier that morning but the rain was clear after 8 AM or so. I got in a total of 12 miles that day.

Lunch time with mama…tacos and margaritas from Taco Diner. Well deserved I would say.

Saturday evening was a little trivia night with friends at Jack Mac’s Swill and Grill. I had never been to this place before but apparently they do trivia every Saturday! It was a fun time, definitely a must do again. I also hear they have a great brunch.

Sunday runday…7 very easy miles around the lake. I was even able to stop and get a shoe pic.

I also opened a new to me pinot noir. It wasn’t my favorite (Meiomi is still my favorite pinot hands down) but I had to do a little taste testing. One of the perks of being a fitness instructor…sometimes your students give you great gifts, like wine. They know me well.

The highlight of the weekend…a lovely sunset from my brand new balcony with a stellar view of the lake. Seriously in love with those colors.

How was your weekend? Did you get into anything fun?

Weds Spin Playlist.

Hello there! It’s a beautiful day in my neighborhood. I am so thankful for my running buddies this morning and getting to fellowship with them before the daily grind. These early mornings with them are easily the best part of my day. Plus getting to see the sunrise is an added bonus. Good stuff.

Running by the Palm Trees and a Summer List.

I logged a few miles this morning by the pretty palm trees…it’s amazing the things I discover in my ‘hood! Legs are feeling good after running Sunday’s half! I sure am thankful for these strong limbs of mine.

I did one of these summer lists last year and since the summer solstice is just around the corner I thought I’d jot down a few things I’m looking forward to during this sunny season.

Eating/ Green smoothies, salmon sashimi, huge pretty salads, and mangoes…I like to cut them up all fancy.

Drinking/ An abundance of H20. I love it ice cold especially in the middle of a long summer run. OK…and maybe some homemade sangria with fresh fruit.

Practicing/ The art of being in the present moment.

Mastering/ Being organized…I’m getting better at this but still a ways to go.

Learning/ From every individual that I meet. We can always stand to learn something new from or about someone.

Trying/ An aerial yoga class. Because it just looks super fun to hang around like that!

Playing/ More with some of my favorite people. What would life be like without girlfriends honestly? I do not want to know.

Finishing/ A juicy beach read type of novel. Suggestions, anyone?

Reading/ Lots of running magazines. Yeah I’m a nerd like that.

Remembering/ To tell my mama and daddy that I love them everyday.

Wearing/ Shorts, bikinis and flip flops!! And keeping my tootsies pedicured because they tend to get out of hand with all of the running that I do.

Cooking/ Some more BLUE APRON dinners. Nom nom.

Working/ A little bit less in order to get out and enjoy the sunshine. Work smarter, not harder.

Traveling/ to Austin, Houston, Galveston and then Las Vegas in the fall.

Wanting/ to spend more time by a body of water…enjoying looking at a beautiful sunset.

What are you looking forward to this summer?

14 Miles, Sunset Run and Wknd Recap.

How was the weekend? Is it over already…sheesh, goes by so fast. Ah well. On to Monday!

I taught my early bird spin class this morning. We zoned out to this mashup with lots of speedy hill climbs. Good stuff.

Let’s backtrack to the weekend…it was without a doubt a lot of fun. I had a long run on Saturday and scaled back the miles…14 mile recovery run and it felt super good. Kept it around a 9 minute pace and my last mile was my fastest at 8:26. It was super humid though and the heat is not letting up this week. Lows in the 70s and highs in the 90s.

4 weeks til the marathon! And my longest run (23 miles) will be next weekend. Bring it on.

After the run I went to the fair with friends. We went to the State Fair classic college football game— Grambling vs. Prairie View A&M. Even though Grambling won PV had the best halftime show! Any band that plays Nelly’s ‘Hot in Herre’ is alright with me.

We walked around a bit and saw the massive ferris wheel with the sunset in background.

And the new and improved Big Tex. He actually burned down not long ago and they rebuilt him, now he’s stronger than ever.

My weekend ended with a 4 mile Sunday sunset run…and a beautiful glass of red wine. Cheers.

How was your weekend? What did you do?

Friday, Fun, Running, Sunsets, TGIFriday Faves, Weekend

TGIFriday Faves.

Happy Friday! I don’t know about you but this week has kind of zipped by. Between teaching spin classes (4 this week – normally it’s 3) and working the 9 to 5 I am ready for a little bit of free time…to let my hair down and be easy!

And do a little ‘it’s the weekend’ dance….because well, why not.

Beyonce gifs just don’t get old.

Let’s get to my faves this week!

-Breaking up the workday with a lunchtime run through the park. Even though it was a little too hot to be out running I kind of enjoyed the change up. It put a whole new energy into the 2nd half of my day.

-This song. I’ve been grooving to it all week long. Great for spin class too.

-Speaking of spin class…Jen sent me a pic of this top she found in Canada. It’s too perfect.

-Getting my nails done. I’ve never strayed too far away from classic french. It’s just a clean and easy look for work and play.

-This scent my friend Natalie got me for my birthday. Great for summertime nights.

-Sunsets right outside my window. Beauty.

Back in the Saddle and RnR San Diego Half Recap.

Hello there! Hope you all had an excellent weekend. Mine went by like a whirlwind and was wall to wall fun. This morning I was up a little too early to teach spin after getting in from California last night. We did some speedy intervals, and a few rolling hills. Love Mondays. That class always gets me goin.

Let’s backtrack to the weekend…Saturday I was off on a jet plane to San Diego with my girl Malaika to run the Rock n Roll San Diego half marathon.

We ventured on over to the expo with about an hour before close and got our swag. So glad we made it.

Later on that evening we had dinner on the patio at Napizza. Wine, salad, and organic chicken pizza on deck.

Sunday morning we were up EARLY for the race. 6:45 am start time. Actually it didn’t FEEL that early to us…since us Texans are 2 hours ahead. So we were fired up and ready to go.

We got to watch the full marathoners take off. Exciting stuff.

I finally got to meet some of my favorite SoCal runners at the half start. Like this lady. Me and Pam have been social media buddies for years. She is the sweetest and pretty dang fast to boot.

The gun went off and we were ready to go. I had heard from a few of the locals about how hilly it was so I just enjoyed the first half as we went up and down inclines. Towards about mile 6-7 the weather started warming up and 75 percent humidity the whole way. It messed with me a little bit mentally since I am NOT a hot/humid weather runner but I just kept telling myself to stay strong and keep pushing. Honestly going into this race…I hadn’t really hardcore trained or anything like that so I didn’t care to PR. Just went there to run and see new sights. I figured I’d fall just behind the 2 hour mark. Even if I ran OVER 2 hours that would have been ok with me. Real laid back just havin fun. And running right along with Dr. Dribble.

The energy and spectators for this race are NONSTOP. Really I didn’t feel like there was a dead moment and I felt so good the whole way. The neighborhoods were beautiful and lots of shade which was helpful. They had jugglers along the course and even folks spraying us with water. Every time another incline came around and I’d see folks stopping and walking I just told myself to keep going. And I did.

I am so happy with that time considering the conditions and those hills. Those California runners, I tell you…are some STRONG folks! I do have to say hills are speedwork in disguise. So good for the legs.

Another one down, folks. Number 18. I think I can make it to 20 half marathons by the end of the year.

Oh, and another thing I love about San Diego…the sunsets. I’m definitely going back.

Sunset Run, a Recipe and Change is a Good Thing.

I came home from teaching spin last night and went for a run in the hood. I almost never go running in the evening time so it was a nice little switch up. I got to see a pretty sunset along my route.

Screen Shot 2014-05-15 at 9.50.02 AM

This morning I was right back up for 6 miles + abs/arms in my living room. Soaking up every last bit of running here while I can. I’m definitely going to miss that view. But ready for something a little different. Change is a good thing. Fosho.

Today I thought I’d share one of my favorite recipes with you. It’s also one of my favorite ways to carb load for a run…pizza! I’ve been experimenting with the gluten free crusts lately. I am digging this one.

Screen Shot 2014-05-15 at 9.56.17 AM

I also LOVE me some Bob’s Red Mill…if you have a little extra time to make it from scratch. It’s good and the crust always comes out nice and chewy.

Last week I made one of my go to pizzas with chicken sausage. Here’s what you need to make it –

Your favorite pizza crust
Chicken sausage, fully cooked (I used the spinach and feta variety)
Fresh spinach
Tomato sauce
Part skim mozzarella cheese
Red pepper flakes/garlic powder

Spread a thin layer of tomato sauce on crust. Sprinkle cheese and top with fresh spinach. Slice chicken sausage and put it on top. Sprinkle garlic powder, red pepper flakes. Bake in the oven for 8-10 minutes until cheese is melted. Serve!

Take that, Papa John’s.

What’s your favorite thing to top on pizza?

Sometimes I Just Need a Reminder.

Last night I set out for a quick run after work. Yes, this morning girl moved over to the dark side due to a crazy schedule yesterday. 7 miles of rolling hills. Definitely not easy but hills are speedwork in disguise so I was determined to conquer them in the crazy heat and humidity.
It helps that I had this gorgeous view. Sometimes I just need a reminder of why I run in the first place.
PR’s are a nice confidence booster…medals are shiny and bling blingy…races are fun and a great adrenaline rush. But at the end of the day…what KEEPS me running is this…
-To chase the sun.
-For the challenge up that hill to make it all the way to the top.
-To compete against MYSELF…and run my fears and doubts into the ground.
-To sightsee and explore.
-To clear my head from the cares of the day.
-For that moment of stillness to talk to God in solitude.
-For those who can’t.
So tell me…why do you run?
